Roger Mercks mother, Annie, stated he was the oldest of four boys, growing up in the mountains of South Carolina. He was very strong and used to do push ups with his younger twin brothers sitting on his back. He told his mother he was going to Vietnam in hopes that his younger brothers would not have to go. He was married just 14 days prior to going to Vietnam, to a local girl. His younger brother also served in Vietnam and died young, possibly due to Agent Orange exposure. Roger also had a closed casket ceremony. School busses were used to transport people to the funeral. He is buried in Mt Carmel Independant Baptist Church cemetery, in Salem, South Carolina.
