Howard hoped to attend Pennsylvania State University after his discharge from the Army. He played varsity basketball at West Philadelphia High School and graduated from there in 1960. He was drafted in March 1964 and sent to Vietnam, where the ammunition bearer was assigned to Company D, of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalary Division (Airmobile). The Private First Class died in the Ia Drang Valley, Pleiku Province, Vietnam on November 17, 1965, during on of the first major battles of the war. He was survived by his parents, a brother and five sisters. Howard lived on North Ithan Street, in West Philadelphia. (From the Philadelphia Daily News, Oct 26, 1987)
